“Ms. Kelman brings to us the full depth & scope of her accomplishments as an artist.
Her education, her success as a jewelry maker and graphic designer, her ceramics, photography and extensive travels abroad all come together. Gloria’s work is fresh and
alive with texture, color, and an almost childlike sense of wonder!"
— The Rice Gallery, Northampton, MA
ABOUT GLORIA KELMAN
I love to make art in nearly every medium. Not only do I create jewelry in metal clay,
I also am thrilled to be a graphic designer, photographer, ceramicist, and fiber artist.....
My interest in photography began at a very early age when I would wander into my father's studio to watch him work. He was a professional photographer and I was inspired by watching his images come to life in the darkroom. He even gave me a Vivitar pocket camera when I was 10 years old and I've been snapping photos ever since.
After earning a B. A. in Fine Art from George Washington University in 1986, focusing on Graphic Design, I started my own business designing and producing my own line of ornate wire and beaded jewelry. I expanded my catalog to include a wide range of home accessories which sold at galleries throughout the U.S.
Eventually, I went back to my field of study and started a graphic design company creating brochures, CD covers and a wide range of printed and web-based materials for new and well established businesses. In this endeavor, I further developed my designer's aesthetic and honed my computer skills.
In 2003, I started an independent study in ceramic work at Mudpie Potters, a community clay studio. I followed an interest in Islamic architecture and midcentury modern art to create a variety of wall pieces that truly were original. What I didn’t realize then was this was the perfect jumping point for the next phase of my work.
That year, a friend had shared with me her newfound excitement about a clay for making jewelry, that when fired, turned into silver. How amazing is that! Last year I became a certified instructor in Precious Metal Clay and now teach workshops throughout the Portland, OR area and exhibit throughout the country.
